SUSTAINABLE AGRICULTURE AND RURAL DEVELOPMENT: ROAD TO SDGS

SUSTAINABLE AGRICULTURE AND RURAL DEVELOPMENT: ROAD TO SDGS

Globally, extreme poverty was reduced by half as the number of people living on less than $1.25 a day decreased from 1.9 billion in 1990 to 836 million in 2015. However, the region is still struggling on some targets. Sustainable rural development is vital to the economic, social and environmental viability of nations. It is essential for poverty eradication since global poverty is overwhelmingly rural. The manifestation of poverty goes beyond the urban-rural divide, it has sub-regional and regional contexts. It is therefore critical, and there is great value to be gained, by coordinating rural development initiatives that contribute to sustainable livelihoods through efforts at the global, regional, national and local levels, as appropriate. Strategies to deal with rural development should take into consideration the remoteness and potentials in rural areas and provide targeted differentiated approaches. The economy of Bangladesh and many other countries in the Asia-Pacific region usually depends primarily on agriculture. The challenge of feeding the increasing population from the shrinking land and water resources is a great task. Many governments and non-government agencies along community organizations are working to support the farmers to produce food materials and related products. However, due to global climate change and many other local and international problems it is really hard to achieve the sustainability of the agriculture sector. On the contrary, without achieving agricultural sustainability it is nightmare to achieve sustainable rural development which is key focus of UN's Sustainable Development Goals to eradicate poverty and hunger forever and build a happy globe for all people. Considering this reality Bangladesh Agricultural Extension Society (BAES) plan to organize an international conference on the hot global issue of Sustainable Agriculture and Rural Development: Road to SDGs.
